The Viraaga Orchestra is a 10-piece contemporary ensemble specialising in live performance, concert recording, and high-end music production, presenting a distinctive sound shaped by Sri Lankan and South Asian musical traditions alongside modern orchestral practice. Designed for both stage and studio, the orchestra brings together traditional and contemporary instruments to create music that is culturally grounded and internationally relevant.
At the core of the ensemble are the traditional instruments tabla, sitar, and flute, which define its cultural and melodic identity. These are complemented by both Eastern and Western violin, allowing the orchestra to explore a wide expressive range—from ornamented, raga-inspired phrasing to classical and cinematic string textures. Lead piano, bass, and a refined rhythm section complete the instrumentation, providing harmonic depth, rhythmic drive, and modern production versatility.
Viraaga Orchestra places strong emphasis on professional concert recording and production. Performances are crafted to preserve the energy and nuance of live music while meeting international recording standards. Particular attention is given to bass foundation, rhythmic precision, and ensemble balance, ensuring clarity and impact across live albums, film and media projects, broadcast performances, and international releases.
Collaboration is central to the orchestra’s artistic approach. The ensemble works closely with composers, producers, solo artists, and creative institutions, adapting its 10-piece formation to suit diverse artistic and technical requirements. This flexibility enables both intimate studio sessions and large-scale concert productions.
Positioned as a contemporary orchestral voice from Sri Lanka, the Viraaga Orchestra bridges Eastern and Western musical languages. Through live performances, concert recordings, and cross-cultural collaborations, the orchestra delivers refined, emotionally resonant music that connects audiences across cultures and borders.
